This is the proof, that spending a whole, cold night in the mountains, will be rewarded. I mean, look at this … how amazing are these colors?
It was on the Melchsee-Frutt and it was summer so I left my long johns at home, what a mistake. I had to run up and down a hill to warm up. But how good was it to stay until the sun was rising up. Mostly the clouds are getting only orange, like the clouds at the horizon. But if the clouds are in the right height and the light can pass the horizon, then you can see such really red clouds in the sky. And the best of it, mirrored in the lake.
This is, what i call, a successful photo night

After a long, cold night there was a silver lining at the horizon. We had nearly no clouds the whole night long, but now at the beginning of the day some clouds were coming up in the sky.
And this was a good thing. Already now you can see a slightly reddish glow at the clouds and this was at the beginning of the blue hour before the sun was rising. If there are no clouds in the sky during the sunrise, the sky is only yellow and the red color is gone when the sun will be visible.
But this time I was to the right time at the right place. Okay, I was the whole night there, but you can still miss the sunrise if you are not watchful.

After a long and cold night, I unfortunately didn’t wear long underwear, the sun was lighten up the mountains again.
It was at the Melchsee-Frutt on 2000m altitude and after the good shoes I have now allways long pants with me. The night was very clear with bright moonlight and therefore the temperatures were falling down although it was summer. With the sun came the clouds and I could take some interesting images while the sun was rising.
And so it was possible to combine the mountain glowing and the moon together on the same picture.

We reached our photospot about midnight and we were shooting until the sun was visible. Eventually we found some wooden logs for making a small fire. But since then I have always a pair of long drawers with me, thereby I won’t get some frost boils even while the summertime…

My friend Sven, was a few days before at a training camp up on the Melchsee-Frutt. He guessed, it could be worth it to stay there for a night to photograph some images.
I was boring, my indexfinger was itching and the weather was right perfectly. Therefore we drove for a short stop over nigh,t up to this place and shooted the whole night long. I have rented two additional lenses, the 17mm TS and the 14mm f/2.8 from Canon.
I have to say, both lenses are really great, extremly sharp and both had nearly no coma. Especially the TS lens I would like to have by my own, if this lens is not so unbelievable heavy. And who wants to hauling more weight up to the mountains? But you have also to learn to use this lens. Because, if you are looking closely to the image, then you can see that the stars at the upper part are not perfectly sharp. After some meditating, I found the reason why this happend. The lens was a little bit tilted, but in the darkness and on the small camera screen I didn’t notice it, how silly…

If the moon is shining so bright, then you will see less stars than in a new moon night. But the landscape looks in the moonlight with this long exposure over two minutes, nearly like a day shot. But with stars in the sky.
