Northern lights – Swiss version

Posted on April 5th, 2014

Some of you know this image, it’s my profiles background. And maybe you want to know the story behind it.
Once upon a time in Switzerland at a beautiful warm spring day I was hiking to the Graeppelensee. It was the day I had the bad experience with a unexpected snow field, the snow field where I get wet feet! Did I ever mentioned, that I hate wet feet? Okay, I was standing in the snow with wet feet, took some pictures and was angry about the whole situation. At this point the clouds where hiding the moon and the landscape sunk in darkness.
But hey, I had I speedlight with me, no, no Mrs. Nature – not with me! So I could brighten up the foreground, while the background still had moonlight.
And now about the strange light in the sky. These are clouds, brighten up by sodium vapor lamps of all the villages around the mountains. And because the clouds are moving fast and I shoot slow, they smeared to this cool effect.

Churfirsten

Posted on April 4th, 2014

The moonshine was bright, the air was clear and I was on my way back down to the valley. But as I saw this wonderful view to the whole Churfirsten, I stopped again, pulled my camera and tripod out of my backpack und shoot this breathtaking panorama of the full mountain range.
Maybe you remember my visit on the Mountain Selun. You can see it here on the picture, it is the second peak from right.

Ski resort by night

Posted on März 29th, 2014

You are going for skiing by day and what are you doing at night? Afterskiing? Sleeping? How boring! Take your snow shoes and go for a walk at the mountains to make some photos at night. You can take images nobody has seen before because nobody is on the slope, except the lonely snowcat drivers.
The only thing you must know is, it is damn cold. And if the wind is blowing over the hill, you better wear the right clothes.

Toggenburg

Posted on März 28th, 2014

During my stay on the mount Selun I took also an image of the Toggenburg, the valley from where we climbed up the mountain. You can see on the opposite side the mount Saentis with the glowing antenna.
And farther away you can see the light pollution of the Bodensee region and probably a part of Germany. The way up was not a piece of cake, I can tell you, especially when you carry the havy camera gear…

The last meteor before sunrise

Posted on März 22nd, 2014

After I watched the whole night the falling perseids, I packed the gear in my backpack again and was walking back, then I saw this beautiful sight on the Mythen, so is called this mountain.
I shoot this image short before the horizon was getting red. And no, what you see at this horizon is not the dawn it is the light pollution.
And what you also can see are the hikers with their headlights going up to enjoy the sunrise from the peak.

The moon in the mirror lake

Posted on März 21st, 2014

It was the night with the wet feet, you may remember. I was standing there, with my wet feet and took this image before the clouds are closing the whole sky. But it was not so worse, because the clouds are not getting thicker and the stars becomes a glow through the clouds. So beside the main annoyance I get a very nice picture from the moon. And maybe I has not told you but: I hate wet feet!

The seven perseids

Posted on März 15th, 2014

Each year around the 12. of August, the earth is crossing the course of the comet Swift-Tuttle. Because this comet is a little dirtball, he left a lot of wreckage on his path and if such a piece is hitting the atmosphere it will glow up in a bright flare. On a photo you can see, that the color is changing while it is burning up.
For this image I let the camera work for more than an hour and took about 90 images. I was lying beside the camera and saw a lot more of this flares, but not in the direction of the lens. But I was lucky enough to catch 7 of this meteors.
If you have time, the weather is good and the moon is not too bright this year, go out and watch the perseids falling down, it’s an awesome experience. I will remember you before it’s time this year.

The night on the peak

Posted on Februar 28th, 2014

It was a real hard piece of work to get up to the Selun with all the gear. But the sightseeing was awesome! Me and my friend enjoyed the stunning  view only a bit, but then the gear has to work. The first break I took, was when I realized the stars are going and the horizon is getting brighter. It was a good idea to climb this mountain, altough both way were hard to go.
I composed this image with 8 shots for noise reduction and 3 extra long exposures to brighten up th foreground.

Planes on the sea of fog

Posted on Februar 23rd, 2014

I’m living below this fog, far away at the horizon. So I decided to climb up a mountain to see the sky. I took a cable car for the lower part and walked up the steep path up to the top, missed the sunset, like everytime, and enjoyed a wonderful landscape. This mountain is called “Mythen” and without fog you can see several lakes. But the lakes are now replaced by the sea, the sea of fog. And if you are check the horizon, you will see strange light curves. This are landing planes at the airport of Kloten. I made this image with a new technique by two shots of 180s.

Sunlight in the winter night

Posted on Februar 21st, 2014

Yes you read correctly, sunlight. The bright spot on the right border is the rising moon and the time is about 22:40. Why sunlight you ask? Didn’t you know that the moon is only large dirt ball and all the light you see is the reflected sunlight? Okay we call it moonlight, but technically it’s sunlight. This is a fantastic thing, if you think the sun is so bright that a ball of dirt can reflect so much light to see the whole landscape at night. I mean this is really awesome, much more than thinking the moon is glowing, imho.
I made this image from 8 shots to reduce the noise. And forgot to take an image for the bright lights so I can’t bring back the burned out parts.
